Hidden in the southern desert canyons of Jordan lies the mysterious ancient city of Petra. Carved by the Nabataeans out of colorful sandstone rock, the "Rose City" used its elaborate water-management system and location near important ancient trade routes to flourish in a harsh desert environment.
